Konzept

Das Institute for Arborphilia, Animals, Aesthetics and Activism (IAAAA) fragt danach, wie sich der Topos der Empathie für Bäume und andere Pflanzen, für nicht-menschliche Tiere und Ästhetik aktuell, historisch, transkulturell und interdisziplinär verschränken.

Ziel ist die Erforschung und Vermittlung dieses Zusammenhangs in den Geistes- Kultur- und Naturwissenschaften, um die Wertschätzung der Flora und Fauna sowohl wissenschaftlich wie auch lebenspraktisch zu stärken. Bestandteil der Aktivitäten ist daher auch das Engagement in Naturschutzverbänden und in der Praxis des Designs.

Design spielt dafür auf mehreren Ebenen eine wichtige Rolle: Im Forschungsdesign, bei der Form untersuchter Gegenstände, der konkreten Umweltgestaltung, der Modulierung unserer Beziehung zur Natur wie zu uns selbst; beide sind dabei untrennbar miteinander verwoben.

Gegenwärtige Pandemien haben vielen Menschen die Wichtigkeit der Natur in nächster Umgebung erneut bewusst gemacht. Immer wieder wird die existenzielle Bedeutung von ‚Naherholungsgebieten‘ für die physische und psychische Gesundheit betont. Dabei stellen sich oft auch ästhetische Fragen, etwa in Bezug auf die Rolle des Blicks auf Bäume und auf andere Pflanzen für das seelische Wohlergehen.

Das IAAAA ist in den Bereichen Philosophie, Design, Kunstgeschichte, Literaturwissenschaft, Kunst, Performance, Interdisziplinäre Musikforschung, Kulturwissenschaft, Cultural Animal Studies und Critical Plant Studies situiert.

Concept

The Institute for Arborphilia, Animals, Aesthetics and Activism (IAAAA) asks how the topos of empathy for trees and other plants, for non-human animals and aesthetics are currently, historically, transculturally and interdisciplinary intertwined.

The aim is to research and communicate this relation in the humanities, cultural sciences and natural sciences in order to strengthen the appreciation of flora and fauna both scientifically and practically. Part of the activities is therefore also the involvement in nature conservation associations and in the practice of design.

Design plays an important role on several levels: in research design, in the form of objects studied, in concrete environmental design, in the modulation of our relationship to nature as well as to ourselves. Both are inextricably interwoven.

Current pandemics have made many people aware of the importance of nature in the immediate vicinity. Often, the existential importance of ‚local recreation areas‘ for physical and mental health is emphasized. This often raises aesthetic questions, for example with regard to the role of looking at trees and other plants for mental well-being.

The IAAAA is situated in the fields of philosophy, design, art history, literary studies, fine art, performance, interdisciplinary music research, cultural studies, cultural animal studies and critical plant studies.
